Phishing: a message that attempts to trick you into calling a fake number or clicking a link so attackers can steal your info.

CONTENT

“8890 Notification: A charges of 321.14 was made using your ID at Apple Store Through Apple Pay. Contact 1(810) 357-5473 now if you didn’t authorize it.”

HOW IT USUALLY WORKS

Hook: A fake urgent alert about a purchase you didn’t make.

Engagement: If you call the number, attackers will often:

  • Pretend to be Apple Support or your bank.

  • Ask for personal or financial info (Apple ID, password, credit card details).

  • Convince you to install “remote support” tools that let them access your device.

  • Pressure you into transferring money to a “safe account” they control.

Outcome: Victims may hand over sensitive data, give attackers access to devices, or lose money directly.

WHAT TO DO

  1. Do not call the number or reply to the message.

  2. Check your Apple account directly through the official Apple ID website or the Apple Support app.

  3. Block the sender on your phone.

  4. Delete the message after taking a screenshot (if you want to report it).

— BONUS ROUND: Reporting the Text

  • Forward the message to 7726 (SPAM) — this goes to your carrier.

  • Report to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

  • You can also report Apple-related scams directly by emailing [email protected].
