Pig Butchering: a long-game scam where attackers build trust through casual conversation, then lure victims into fake investment platforms (often crypto) to steal money and personal data.

Phishing: a message that attempts to trick you into clicking a link or downloading a file so attackers can steal your info

Smishing: checking to see if a number is active

CONTENT

“Do you have any stories worth sharing recently?”

HOW IT USUALLY WORKS

Hook: A vague, friendly opener that feels personal but could apply to anyone.

Engagement: If you reply, attackers will often:

  • Pretend to be someone you know, or a new “friend” who wants to chat.

  • Engage in small talk to build rapport and make you trust them.

  • Gradually introduce the idea of investing together (crypto, trading, or another “hot opportunity”).

  • Direct you to a fake platform where your deposits appear to grow — until the attacker vanishes with your money.

Outcome: Victims may lose significant amounts of money, share personal data, or both.

WHAT TO DO

  1. Do not reply. Engagement confirms your number is active.

  2. Block the sender on your phone.

  3. Delete the message after taking a screenshot (if you want to report it).

– BONUS ROUND: Reporting the Text –

  • Forward the message to 7726 (SPAM) — this goes to your carrier.

  • Report to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov
